Buying a used tractor can save a significant amount over a new purchase, but it comes with more risk if you don't know what to check. Start with the engine hours on the meter, but don't rely on it alone: ask for service records to confirm the hours match the maintenance history.

Inspect the hydraulics by running the lift arm through its full range with an implement attached, checking for slow or jerky movement that could indicate worn seals. Check tyre wear patterns too, since uneven wear can point to alignment or suspension issues that are costly to fix.

Always start the engine cold if possible, since a tractor that struggles to start when cold often has issues with the injectors or battery that a warmed-up demonstration will hide. Listen for unusual knocking or excessive smoke on startup.

Finally, verify the ownership documents and any outstanding loan on the tractor before finalising payment, ideally through the same dealer network or a trusted local mechanic who can also give the machine an independent once-over.
