Gurmeet Singh had been farming his family's 14 acre plot near Patiala with a 25 HP tractor inherited from his father, one that struggled to run a rotavator at the right depth for proper seedbed preparation. After consulting neighbouring farmers and comparing options online, he upgraded to a 45 HP tractor with significantly higher lift capacity.
The difference showed up immediately in his seedbed quality. Where the old tractor left the soil unevenly tilled, forcing multiple passes, the new tractor completed the job in a single pass at the correct depth, saving both diesel and time during the narrow sowing window.
Over two seasons, Gurmeet reports his wheat yield has risen by close to 15 percent, which he attributes primarily to better seedbed preparation and more timely sowing, both made possible by having adequate power and lift capacity for the implements he runs.
His advice to other farmers considering an upgrade: don't just match HP to your acreage, match it to the heaviest implement you plan to run regularly, since that's usually where an underpowered tractor struggles most.
